3 Ways God Rewards Our Obedience

The generosity of God continues to amaze me.
He didn’t just send Christ to die for our sins.
He didn’t just offer forgiveness and adoption into His family as a son or daughter.
He didn’t just give us grace, freedom from sin and guilt, and power to live godly lives.
He didn’t just send the Holy Spirit to train, guide, and empower us.
If He had stopped there, we would already be blessed beyond measure.
But He has done much more! God gives us commands to obey in the Bible.
He also promises rewards for obedience!
Let’s discover 3 generous rewards that God loves to give His people.

1) Joy

Obedience from the heart always produces the fruit of joy. Christ encouraged His disciples, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love…These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.” (John 15:10-11) God doesn’t want His children to trudge through life with long, gloomy faces and heavy hearts. He didn’t save us so we could be the “First World martyrs,” adhering to a lengthy list of rules and always worrying about being good enough. That would completely miss the point.

God’s heart for us is that we obey Him, know Him, and love Him. As we do this, He will open our eyes to see life through the lens of His joy. To see every leaf as painted by a Master’s brush, to watch a child giggle with unspoiled delight, to marvel at a gift meant just for you, to fall in adoration before the Throne—this is His joy! At our church in Sydney Mines, we learn to experience and share His joy.

2) True Rest in His Love

As Christ said in John 15:10, If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” When we disobey God, we cannot experience rest and peace in our souls. Even if we can squash our conscience’s protests, we lose our capacity to rest. Niggling worries begin a merry-go-round in our minds. Guilt slips in the door of our hearts. Fear reaches its icy fingers into our soul. What is wrong? We have chosen sin over God, rebellion over loyalty. If we repent and ask His forgiveness, we can return to a place of rest under His wings.

Even in trying and stressful circumstances, obedience gives us rest. If we obey, we know that we have done our part. We can leave the outcome in God’s capable hands. All He requires is that we obey—not that we solve world poverty, foretell the future, or fix our spouses. Let’s simply obey and find a place of true rest…in His loving care.

3) Continued Guidance

Elisabeth Elliot said it well, “Does it make sense to pray for guidance about the future if we are not obeying in the thing that lies before us today?…Rest assured: Do what God tells you to do now, and, depend upon it, you will be shown what to do next.”

Psalm 37:23 gives us God’s promise, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.” A good man faithfully obeys the Lord. As he does so, God will direct his steps. Our obedience today is vital if we want to have God’s guidance tomorrow. Learn more about God’s guidance at our church in Sydney Mines.

If we desire joy, rest, and guidance, let’s obey God. However, we must remember that these rewards can be stolen. What steals our joy, robs our rest in God’s love, and prevents continued guidance? Sin steals these rewards. When we’re tempted, let’s remember that sin steals (but obedience brings) blessing. Let’s choose obedience and delight in the generous rewards of our Father!
