The Heart of a Servant-Leader

What is a servant-leader? Jesus taught the concept of servant leadership in Matthew 20:25-28.

“But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

If you want to play a significant role in the kingdom of God, you must learn to be a servant. Servanthood is the gateway through which every great leader has passed. Jesus demonstrates to us what authentic servant-leadership looks like. How can we follow in His footsteps and be true servant-leaders? Here are 3 essential choices to make.

Let’s discover the answer in Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians.

Hymn Stories: “How Great Thou Art”

Many of our great hymns of the faith have heart-warming histories. Born out of the daily struggle, toil, and victory of saints gone before us, they ring through the ages. Hymns give us light, truth, and hope. Here is the story behind the hymn “How Great Thou Art.”

One August day in 1859, a son was born in the tiny village of Mönsterås, Sweden. His name was Carl Gustav Boberg. He grew up in relative anonymity, the son of a carpenter. However, young Carl demonstrated a remarkable talent for public speaking. After a brief stint as a sailor, Carl became a lay minister in the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden. In addition to his ministry, he edited the town’s only newspaper, the Mönsterås News. Serving in an obscure Swedish village, I am sure Carl never dreamed that his writing would touch hearts across the globe.
