Missions History: Amy Carmichael

“It is great to be faced with the impossible, for nothing is impossible if one is meant to do it. Wisdom will be given, and strength. When the Lord leads, He always strengthens.”

The woman who wrote these inspiring words spoke from the crucible of experience. For over 50 years, Amy Carmichael served as a Anglican missionary in southern India. Through her ministry, hundreds of children were rescued from slavery in the Hindu temples. Her books have inspired Christians around the world to serve God—both in their Jerusalem and on the mission field. Amy’s writing also paved the way for legal reforms in India to protect children and outlaw prostitution. However, Amy’s life and ministry were marked by obstacles that seemed insurmountable. Sometimes, people at our church in North Sydney face difficult circumstances as well.

Your Bible Is Not An Art Gallery

Too often, we read the Bible in the same way that we would visit an art gallery.
Imagine with me…you carve a few minutes out of your busy schedule, take a taxi to the gallery, and land on the front doorstep out of breath.

Stepping inside, you notice a new Renaissance exhibit and stroll over to take a closer look.
You are drawn to a print of Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
Admiring it, you take note of its brilliant composition, colour, and light.
“What a visionary painter,” you think. “His work was way ahead of its time.”
