The Story Behind “Angels, from the Realms of Glory”

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story
Now proclaim Messiah’s birth…
This charming carol was penned by the Irishman James Montgomery. We like to sing it during the Christmas season at our church in North Sydney. James was an underdog, who struggled in school and lost his parents when he was only 12. Yet God took this boy from humble beginnings and used him to do great things. Here is the story behind his best-known poem, “Angels, From the Realms of Glory.”

The High Cost of Christ’s Birth

To enter the earth, this sin-stained sphere, Jesus paid a high cost. The mighty King of kings stooped to enter the form of a helpless baby. He willingly stepped into the binding harness of time and space. What price did He pay to live among men? Let’s examine three significant privileges He laid aside for our sakes.

As we enter the Christmas season, let’s choose to be intentional. While we enjoy cherished traditions and embrace family ties, we must be careful not to be distracted. Like Martha, it’s easy for us to be consumed with the whirl of activities and neglect to sit at Jesus’ feet. In this season, make time to step away from your hustle and seek Jesus.
