3 Things God Cannot Do

3 things God cannot do
We serve the God of Heaven. All power in heaven and in earth is under His command.  His voice spoke the worlds into existence. When He opens a door, no man can shut it. When He closes a door, no one can open it. With such power, is there anything He can’t do? In fact, the Bible reveals to us three things that God cannot do.

1) God cannot lie.

People are notoriously unreliable. Twisting truth for selfish motives, they speak lies. Friends, coworkers, and even family deceive us. Words of leaders and pundits often ring with a hollow echo of doubt. We wonder—who can we really trust?

But God is not a man, that He should lie. In Titus 1:2, Paul writes of, “…God, that cannot lie.” Each word He uttered is living truth. Each line He wrote is eternal truth. Each promise He gave is unchanging truth. We can trust His Word. What a comfort it is to know that every word from the lips of our Master is truth!

2) God cannot break His promises.

Within the pages of Scripture, we discover many precious promises. To those who will turn from sin and place their faith in Christ alone, He promises eternal life. Join us at our church in Sydney Mines to learn more. God also promises true rest, deliverance from temptation, and lasting peace. He promises that He will never leave us or forsake us.

How can we know that God will keep His promises? 2 Timothy 2:13 tells us, If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.” If God has made a promise, His character guarantees that it will be fulfilled. To break His promise would be to deny Himself. He cannot do that. We can trust God’s promises and claim them for ourselves.

3) God cannot be tempted with evil.

“Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:” (James 1:13) The devil has no basis on which to tempt God. As weak humans, we are tempted by the devil’s appeal to our sin nature. But God has no sin nature. He is completely holy and righteous.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness (Matthew 4), He countered the devil’s words with Scripture. He refused to yield to temptation. How does this truth about God impact us? Often, when trials come, we are tempted to doubt God’s goodness. The enemy sends his fiery darts into our mind. He whispers, “God doesn’t really love you, or He wouldn’t have allowed this. God isn’t really good.”

If we don’t know God, we may accept these lies. The truth is that God is always good. He always loves us. He cannot be tempted with evil, so He never commits evil or sin. We can trust both the character and the actions of our loving Father.

Since God cannot lie, you can trust His Word for truth today.

Since God cannot break His promises, you can claim them for grace today.

Since God cannot be tempted with evil, you can trust His goodness for peace today. Which of these truths do you need to apply in your life?
