Capers Raise Thousands for Cape Breton Cancer Centre

Cape Breton news, Cape Breton events

Here at Northside, we’re excited to start featuring good news stories from our local community. Today, we’re kicking things off with the New Harris Run, Walk, or Crawl. This annual fun run is a fantastic way to support cancer patients and their families right here in Cape Breton.

Read on to learn how Capers just raised thousands of dollars in the New Harris Run, Walk, or Crawl.

How did the New Harris Run start?

In 2009, the O’Neil family hosted the first New Harris Run in memory of Adam O’Neil. They wanted to gather their community to remember the loved ones they’d lost to cancer. And they wanted to assist the brave patients who were currently fighting cancer.

They decided to host the Run at the base of Kelly’s Mountain, overlooking the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes. Participants could either walk along New Harris Road, or they could run a 5K or 10K course. To keep the runners fueled, the family would bake and purchase snacks.

And, in May of 2009, the first participants hit the ground running. Since then, the New Harris Run has become a popular community event.

On Sunday, May 19, 2019, the New Harris Run celebrated their 10th year! They had a hay ride, a bouncy tent, local entertainment, and yummy, homemade muffins.

Who benefits from the New Harris Run?

In honour of Adam O’Neil, the family donates 100% of proceeds to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. This fund supports the families of local cancer patients, so they don’t have to worry as much about finances.
On average, the Cancer Centre serves 150 people a day. According to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation, “Last year alone, more than $363,000 was disbursed back to cancer patients in Cape Breton and since the program started, more than two million dollars have be given back to help patients right here at home.”

Since the family donates the snacks, not a single cent of the proceeds is taken off for expenses. Every dollar goes directly to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. At our church in Sydney Mines, we’re so proud of these generous folks!

How much has been raised to date?

Before the 2019 run, over $36,000 was raised for the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. According to the latest update, the 2019 event raised over $15,000! Way to go, Capers!
