Why shop at a Farmers’ Market?

First, it’s a fantastic way to keep your dollars in Cape Breton. Instead of buying all your groceries at a big box store, you can help a fellow Caper by supporting their business. You might be helping a young family pay their rent…or helping a college student pay for tuition. You might think that your purchases aren’t making a difference…but they are! Supporting local businesses helps people develop financial independence…and stay right here in Cape Breton with their families.

Plus, you’ll find higher quality products at the Farmers’ Market. Instead of tough clamshell strawberries imported from California, you can bite into juicy, fresh strawberries from a local farm. You can buy products that were handmade right here in Cape Breton, instead of mass-produced in a Chinese factory. And you can buy delicious, locally produced groceries for your family. It’s a win-win for everyone!

Where is the Farmers’ Market located?

Thanks to sponsorship from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Farmers’ Market moved into a new location in downtown Sydney this year. After many hours of volunteer labour, the Market held a soft opening on March 23. Located at 15 Falmouth Street, the new space has 10,000 square feet of space. It also offers plenty of parking and wheelchair accessible parking and bathrooms.

What can I find at the Farmers’ Market?

With over 50 regular food and craft vendors (plus casual vendors), the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market has something for everyone! According to their website, “Our market hosts meat, egg and produce farmers, food and beverage producers, cooks, bakers, herbalists, apiarists, jewelers, wood-workers, and various other artisans and crafters.”

Here’s a sampling of awesome local products you can find at the Market:

-Local honey

-Pastured free range eggs

-Cards and artwork by local designers

-Handmade cosmetics

-Cupcakes and other desserts

-Beeswax candles

-Firepits made of recycled iron

In addition, the Market’s Food Hall is currently under construction. Once it is open, customers will be able to visit 12 food vendors, grab lunch, and hang out in the seating area. It will feature a chef’s demonstration stall, a full commercial kitchen, and seating for 70 people.
