Devotional: His Eye Is On the Sparrow

His Eye Is On the Sparrow, hymns, hymn stories

“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.”

Luke 12:6-7

In the spring of 1905, a pastor named Walter Martin and his wife Civilla were living in Elmira, New York. During their ministry there, the Martins befriended an older couple named Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle. Both of these dear saints had serious health problems. Mr. Doolittle wheeled himself to work in a wheelchair, and his wife had been bedridden for almost two decades. Civilla later wrote of the couple, “Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them.”

One day, Pastor Martin asked his friends what their secret was. How could they still trust in God and have joy in their pain-filled existence?

Mrs. Doolittle answered simply, “His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

Profoundly touched, Civilla took out pen and paper and wrote the lyrics to “His Eye Is On the Sparrow” that very day. The next day, she mailed her work to Charles Gabriel, a noted composer, who wrote a melody for it. And the rest, as they say, is history. At our church in Sydney Mines, we love this gospel song.

Friend, I don’t know what battle you may be fighting right now. But rest assured, the God who watches the sparrow is also watching you. He sees each tear you cry, and He understands the pain of the battle. Seek Him for the comfort and strength you need, and you will not be disappointed.

With Civilla Martin, you will be able to say, “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free. His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” Join us at our church in Sydney Mines to learn more.
