Devotional: Thirsty for His Presence

“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.”

Exodus 33:14-15

Have you ever seen a child cling to his mother and refuse to let go? To his young mind, she represents warmth, comfort, and security. Beyond her arms is a big, scary world. Who knows what dangers could be lurking around the corner?

Likewise, God calls us to become childlike. He doesn’t mean that we are to be immature or selfish. Rather, we are to be childlike in our faith, our humility, and our dependence on God. At our church in Sydney Mines, we understand this spiritual principle.

God is looking for people who are so dedicated to His will that they pray, “Lord, if You’re not coming, I won’t go. If Your hand of blessing isn’t on my life, it isn’t worth living.”

In these verses, Moses wasn’t willing to take a single step until he was sure of God’s will. He wasn’t consulting maps and Google Earth for the best route. Instead, he was seeking God’s direction first. He knew that, without God’s presence, the children of Israel would be wandering for a very long time.

Like Moses, we need to be hungry for God’s presence. When we seek His will first, He will show us clearly what to do. He will go before us and make the path easier. And He will give us the spiritual rest we long for.

Each day, learn to seek God’s presence and walk with Him. Remember—He will never leave you or forsake you! At our church in Sydney Mines, we are so grateful for this truth.
