Hunger: The Key to Spiritual Growth

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus painted a picture of those who are blessed. He taught, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6) Does your heart cry out for righteousness? Are you hungry to know more of God? If you want to grow spiritually, you need to be hungry.
Too often, we are satisfied with our current level of spirituality. After all, we don’t want to be radical, extreme, or (dare I say it?) offensive to the people around us! We think, “If I get too close to Jesus, He’s going to put His finger on things in my life that need to change. He’ll ask me to do things I really don’t want to do.” To avoid His convicting work, we keep Him at arm’s length.

We want comfort, but not conviction; success, but not suffering; and encouraging words, but not life-changing truth.

All we want from God is a comfortable, soul-warming experience.

However, God is not satisfied with occupying a cramped linen closet in our heart. He wants to be Lord of every room, every nook, and every cranny of our hearts—no matter how deep, dark, or embarrassing. Jesus will knock, but He will not barge in where He is not wanted. Are you constantly seeking to open more of your heart to Him? Does He have keys to every lock in your heart?

In Romans 12:1, Paul commands us, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” We have been bought—mind, soul, and body—with the precious blood of Christ. Dare we hold back any of the rooms of our heart? Dare we refuse to answer the knock of our Saviour?

If we are hungry to know God, we will answer His knock. We will surrender more and more of our hearts to His hands. We will faithfully spend time in the Bible and prayer. We will trust His power and delight in His goodness. Are you hungry for God? At our church in Sydney Mines, we want God’s presence and power. Join us in seeking Him, and discover how He can nourish your heart.

Only God can satisfy His people’s hunger and fill their souls with good. If you thirst, He will lead you to fountains of living water. If you hunger, He will feed your soul with the Bread of Life. Will you come to Him?

“For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” (Psalm 107:9)
