Seven Reasons to Attend Church

Have you ever stopped to think about why we attend church? With today’s technology, we can access amazing audio sermons online. We can sing along to Christian music, listen to an audio recording of the Bible, and read the work of noted Christian pastors. But if we want a vibrant Christian life, we must attend church. Why do we still feel that we need to attend church? Why bother to meet face-to-face in real time in a physical building? Let’s consider 7 reasons why you need to attend church.
1) To meet with Jesus
In Matthew 18:20, Jesus promises, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Jesus is present when we come to church for His sake. When we enter church, our heart’s desire should be, “Lord, I want to meet with You today.”
2) To encourage other Christians and be encouraged
In Hebrews 10:24-25, Paul instructs believers, “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” It is always encouraging to meet together at our church in Sydney Mines. In church, we give and receive love, fellowship, and encouragement. We need the support of fellow Christians to stay faithful.
3) To worship God
Psalm 150:1b shouts, “Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.” We can participate in corporate worship at church. The Lord loves to hear the praises of His people. He draws near when we worship Him sincerely.
4) To build our faith
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17) We hear God’s Word read, illuminated, and applied at church. This builds our faith and trust in God. No other institution spreads God’s Word before us like a feast. At church, we develop a love for God’s Word and a deep faith in its Author.
5) To follow Jesus’ example
If church was unnecessary, then surely Jesus would have abolished it. He was the revolutionary who overturned the moneychangers’ tables. He shocked the people of His day with radical truth. He brought in a new covenant, freedom from the law, and unprecedented access to the throne of God! But Luke 4:16 says of Jesus, “…as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.” If Jesus regularly attended church, can we, who are called by His Name, do any less?
6) To give God first place in our lives
In Matthew 10:33, Jesus commands us, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Our church attendance is directly related to our priorities. Would we skip work if we just didn’t feel like it? Would we let our kids skip school if they wanted to have friends over? If we sincerely want to give God first place in our lives, we will be faithful in our church attendance.
7) To exercise our spiritual gifts
Paul writes in Ephesians 4:7, 11-12, “But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”

God gives each believer spiritual gifts. We are called to invest these gifts in the context of the local church. Your church has a need that only you can fill–by using the gifts God gave you. (Join us at our church in Sydney Mines to learn more about spiritual gifts.)

Why should we attend church? Going to church builds our relationship with God. It is a choice to give Him first priority on our time. We can meet with Him, worship Him, and serve Him. Church also offers the support and fellowship of likeminded people. At church, we can use our spiritual gifts and abilities. We can build our faith, follow Jesus’ example, and grow in wisdom. Church is the best place we can be—not just on Sunday morning but also every time the doors are open!
