What Elijah Teaches Us About Discouragement

If anyone understood what discouragement felt like, it would be the prophet Elijah. After a great victory on Mount Carmel, he received a death threat from the wicked queen Jezebel. Fearful, he fled into the wilderness of Beersheba.  He prayed, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.” (1 Kings 19:4) Yet, in that desolate place, God met him, strengthened him, and gave him a renewed mission. Loneliness is a common struggle in our culture. Although a person may have 1,000 friends on Facebook, they may still feel very alone. Whether you’re young or old, single or married, you’ve probably struggled with loneliness. At our church in Sydney Mines, we know that everyone feels lonely at some point.
