Nicknamed the “Flying Scotsman,” Eric Liddell was one of the best known Christians of the 20th century. His stunning Olympic victory was showcased in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire. (Some of the folks at our church in Sydney Mines have enjoyed watching this film.) But Eric’s greatest triumph was yet to come.

Missions History: Amy Carmichael

“It is great to be faced with the impossible, for nothing is impossible if one is meant to do it. Wisdom will be given, and strength. When the Lord leads, He always strengthens.”

The woman who wrote these inspiring words spoke from the crucible of experience. For over 50 years, Amy Carmichael served as a Anglican missionary in southern India. Through her ministry, hundreds of children were rescued from slavery in the Hindu temples. Her books have inspired Christians around the world to serve God—both in their Jerusalem and on the mission field. Amy’s writing also paved the way for legal reforms in India to protect children and outlaw prostitution. However, Amy’s life and ministry were marked by obstacles that seemed insurmountable. Sometimes, people at our church in North Sydney face difficult circumstances as well.
